ABSTRACT

The stuff of historical and geographical investigations, can be borrowed from museums, can be visited free through organisations such as English Heritage and can be in the form of local people who can visit the school to describe their early life. The History and Geography National Curriculum Reports address the problems of children with special learning needs. If the majority of children are receiving little entitlement to history and geography, then it follows those children who experience difficulties in learning are likely to have even less. A lack of access to history and geography, coupled with a heavy emphasis on the basics, will limit the curricular experiences of children experiencing difficulties in other aspects of their learning. Teachers rarely assess the special learning needs of children in geography and history, often preferring to base their analysis of special learning needs in humanities upon borrowed assessments of special language or mathematical needs.
