ABSTRACT

For children who experience learning difficulties, curriculum programmes need to emerge which have something special in design and implementation. The school's development plan will be concerned with meeting requirements by making any necessary organisational changes, identifying priorities for change and targeting resources. The Education Act stated that a child has special educational needs if she/he has a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made. A Framework for the Primary Curriculum lends support to the continued development of cross curricular approaches. The primary curriculum should be responsive to children, their experiences and their initiatives. The child responds and proceeds to some inventive activity, while the teacher acts as a reflective agent, responding to the child's actions and providing direct instruction where necessary and where requested by the child. The 1981 Education Act with its integration aims has encouraged the retention of more children with learning difficulties in primary schools.
