ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with methods which can be used by the classroom teacher. To provide the teacher with accurate information in order to design effective teaching programmes may take the teacher or psychologist a number of sessions, particularly where the child is hyperactive, physically handicapped or simply unco-operative. Most teachers already observe and note a great deal of general information in a daily or weekly diary. The question arises as to whether the teacher can afford to spend time on regular observation periods. A chance observation by a teacher that a very distractable child looked at an unusual wind-up toy for a few seconds led to a highly successful pro-gamme for increasing the child's attention to selected objects. An observation form was drawn up and the teacher and classroom assistant asked to spend a few minutes each day observing the child with these variables in mind.
