ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book brings together emergent knowledge at the intersection of public space design and social cohesion and to take a global and comparative view on scholarly research and urban design practice in both the Global North and Global South. It expands our understanding of what social cohesion really means, how it is played out in different cultural contexts and how it can be achieved through public space design. The book analyses the role of public space design vis-a-vis social cohesion and provides a multidimensional and multilevel understanding of social cohesion. It focuses on the dimensions of Kearns and Forrest with a view to provide a well-rounded analysis of the outcomes and potential contributions of bottom-up design processes to social cohesion.
