ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore questioning. They explain how important it is to plan teacher questions in advance and encourage children’s questions through providing the right opportunities and environment. The chapter begins with the importance of questioning and types of questions that are asked in the classroom suggesting that fewer, more effective questions can be used by teachers where questions are planned for based upon the type of thinking we want to prompt from the children. Questioning is fundamental to learning and teaching as a provocation or prompt for thinking. It is a powerful tool which requires careful planning. An emotionally safe learning environment is vital in order for children to feel able to share their thinking and trust that all ideas are welcome and valued.
