ABSTRACT
The current economic success stories in making things locally and sustainably around the world can influence future policy and land use laws to recognize and embrace newly defined urban industries. Urban planning mechanisms such as performance zoning, land banking, denser industrial zones, and potentials for mixed-use buildings and districts are explored. New manufacturing in the next economy is cleaner, smaller, smarter, and lighter and thus can inhabit taller and denser manufacturing sites for a sustainable circular economy as spearheaded by public agencies, private developers, and locally based nongovernmental organizations, but it can also exist everywhere.
