Part of the study’s scope was to develop a conceptual framework for existing “mixed-use” streets. These streets represent a unique challenge since they cater to urban environments that are in flux, with a diversity of land uses that include manufacturing, light industrial, commercial, community facilities, and residences. This poses an inherent conflict between the needs and use of the public realm. At the same time these streets offer a unique opportunity for a more fine-grained approach to design that recognizes and enhances their unique character.
