ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the spatial and architectural dimensions of informal production in China to better understand the relationship between formal and informal approaches to production. The chapter uses case studies of urban villages in Southern China to explore how informal spaces generate new ideas, rapid prototyping and creativity. It offers insights into how to design for distributed systems that are constantly evolving and that rely on shifting networks rather than hierarchically organized workspaces.
