ABSTRACT

Sexuality is an integral part of well-being across the life course. For older people with disabilities (PWD), age and disability status intersect to create unique sexual experiences and needs that have long been stigmatised, resulting in limited access to sexual citizenship. Of particular importance are the socio-cultural realities of ageism and ableism that pose specific challenges to the pursuit of sexual wellness, and can serve to invalidate and/or inhibit access to a rich and beneficial intimate life. These realities are impacted by the varied biological, psychological, social and cultural factors across the life course to shape the sexual trajectory of older PWD. This chapter examines sexual citizenship for older PWDs via a life-course perspective, while considering the biological, psychological, social and cultural influences on the sexual trajectory.
