ABSTRACT

There is a noticeable and concerning neglect of the sexualities of older adults living with dementia across both sexual rights and critical disability scholarship. Although there is growing attention to sexuality in gerontological literature, this has largely been informed by biomedical and cognitivist discourses, which have restricted the focus to sexual dysfunction and the prevention of sexual harm. Our purpose here is to offer a critical analysis of the literature and to inform the development of a more just approach to sexual rights in the context of dementia, that includes both protection from harm and the right to sexual pleasure.
