ABSTRACT
This chapter explores collecting and cataloguing practices in a public, middle-class dominated, subscription library in Plymouth, then England’s fifth-largest provincial town. Seven extant catalogues, dating from 1824 to 1886, permit Bautz to explore the library’s acquisition patterns, holdings, and cataloguing practices against the background of national movements and trends in culture, but also in cataloguing codes.
