ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the development of the book collection of Cardinal Bernardino Spada (1594–1661) in the competitive environment of Baroque Rome, showing how the library was shaped by the nuova scienza (New Science) of observation associated with Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) and relates the library to paintings by the Sienese Niccolò Tornioli (1606–1651) to show parallels between these works of art and the cardinal’s astronomical and bibliographic texts.
