ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 explains how in the first quarter of the twentieth century, Hermann J. Muller’s reductionist metaphysics was reflected both in his science and in his lifelong, unwavering belief in positive eugenics as a political tool to perfect human evolution. The chapter discusses how Muller’s soul-belief in human immortality not only made his science always oriented to future possibilities, but it also provided a powerful searchlight for his research while he would have otherwise groped in the darkness of indeterminate empiricism.
