ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns three themes: self-advocacy, pupil behaviour and the management of a primary school. It also concerns strategies to encourage the participation of young children in the running of their own school lives. The chapter discusses behaviour policy and ethos; democracy and individualism; involvement of pupils and parents in the school curriculum and special needs. It deals with institutional behaviour policy. The chapter outlines those aspects of the school's policy which also seek to maintain that side of the balance. It explores that policies which most closely connect with those associated with involvement/self-advocacy are likely to be found. The chapter explores that these policies concerned with the involvement of individual children in the school and of the school in individual children. It focuses on policy and practice in a particular primary school. Many other schools are pursuing at least equally progressive policies with regard to children's involvement and special educational needs.
