ABSTRACT

Patients with significant aphasic disorders or visuo-spatial neglect were excluded from the study since they could not cope with the above-mentioned tests. The sample was dichotomized by using, as cut-off scores, the medians of those tests which are supposed to be sensitive to frontal lobe dysfunction. Although patients with problem-solving disturbances represent a heterogeneous group with respect to etiology, extent and localization of brain lesions there is a certain agreement among researchers that 'executive function' is mainly impaired due to frontal lobe damage. Contrary to the host of studies and case reports dealing with the clinical picture and the most frequently used diagnostic approaches, only a few controlled studies have tested the possible effects of a cognitive remediation programme in the frontal patients. Compliance with treatment could be significantly raised by using a great variety of tasks and exercises closely related to their every day experiences.
