ABSTRACT

Problems of orientation, memory and behaviour control are rather common after traumatic head injury. In patients with deficits in regulatory processing, the challenge to the treatment team may be described as to further the release of function in intact areas of the brain that may not be available and useful to the patient without special intervention. The applicability of a diary or notebook for the purpose is not obvious. As indicated, most often the diary is used for purposes of memory training. Basic to the concept of regulatory processing is the notion of cerebral interaction. Obviously, the memory problems of the patient will interfere with treatment, and Prigatano gives several suggestions on how to cope with this, such as applying short sessions, providing frequent repetitions of main points in therapy. Very often cognitive training begins with orientation and memory tasks, and the book is introduced as a tool to be used in memory training.
