ABSTRACT

Information drawn from the survey of Lusaka provides evidence of the rapid urbanization of the city. Although urbanization does not necessarily develop as a result of industrialization, it seems accurate to say that most Zambian towns have grown mainly in response to increasing industrialization and the concomitant growth of administration. As the levels of industrialization and urbanization increased in Zambia, the tendency for migrants to move direct from their place of birth to Lusaka diminished. As the premier political and administrative centre in independent Zambia, further economic and industrial developments have been established, and these developments have served as magnets for migrants from within and outside the country. The overall industrial, political and administrative development in Zambia has generated changes in the pattern of migration flow as well as in the characteristics of migrants to Lusaka. Apart from the change in the pattern of flow, the characteristics of migrants have also changed.
