ABSTRACT

A palimpsest is a recycled writing surface with traces of an effaced text remaining. An eraser does not remove pencil markings entirely from paper. Scraping papyrus or vellum for reuse is equally imperfect. The original writing is still there, showing through any new words placed over top. For literary theorist Linda Hutcheon, this is a useful image when contemplating literary influence and artistic adaptations. There are no dietary restrictions preventing the consumption of the non-speaking animals. Talking animals, on the other hand, are “free subjects” and loyal Narnians recoil at the thought of eating them. Schweitzer became deeply critical of animal experimentation and opposed all forms of hunting for sport. In various ways, Lewis also made his life his argument with respect to animals.
