ABSTRACT

Understanding marine extremes is fundamental if we are to take advantage of positive new areas for development, as well as respond to and overcome challenges. This chapter synthesises the bodies of knowledge and case studies explored in this volume to draw out the lessons learned and the options and opportunities moving forward. The value of theoretical and applied knowledge that is rapidly being acquired in relation to marine extremes is clear, but there is a vital need for continued research across diverse disciplines and related to various challenges. We propose a research agenda that will generate an enhanced understanding across the different aspects of marine extremes explored in this volume. This new knowledge could be utilised by stakeholders to inform good governance of the oceans, human activities and responses to marine extremes.
