ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors examine what is known about zero to eight-year-old children’s learning from media and the conditions under which they learn best. They explore how children’s development impacts learning, as well as how characteristics of the media themselves, such as production features and platform affordances, shape what children take away from educational content. They identify key theories that inform our understanding, as well as gaps in knowledge that have resulted from rapid technological change. They conclude with recommendations for future research that can illuminate how best to maximize the potential of media to be an educational resource in children’s lives.
