ABSTRACT

About a decade ago, “Effects of Mobile Communication” was added to this volume’s chapter list. While that initial narrative was bounded to the affordances of texting and calling, this chapter addresses the so-called smartphone revolution, with an expanded range of technological affordances, social practices, and media effects. This chapter also moves beyond the previous scope of the mundane by calling much-needed attention to the increasingly important role of mobile communication in acute situations, such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
