      ABSTRACT

The European Union (EU) and South Korea both gained confidence as international actors around the same period on the global stage. Korea actively began to participate in international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to promote itself under the slogan of globalization in the early 1990s. It is against this background that the EU and Korea seek to build effective cooperation on global issues in the international community. There are growing reasons for the EU and Korea to expand and strengthen their relationship under sustainable and rule-based multilateral frameworks such as the UN, G20 summit, and Asia-Europe Meeting based on this successful strategic partnership. In the security strategy document published by the EU, the 2003 European Security Strategy, the EU emphasizes effective multilateralism in approaching European security challenges.
