ABSTRACT

Art can prove to be very effective in inspiring metaphors that can transfer a concept and stimulate reflection. In some cases, scientific objects, tools, images and products can be regarded as artworks in themselves because of their strong aesthetical or fascinating character. There are many examples of collaborations where multidisciplinary teams including artists and scientists or science communicators cooperate to generate artworks that convey a message or provide new interpretations of a concept. The chapter shows how applying the aesthetic dimension of art to scientific objects and concepts has profound implications connected to meaning-making and to the curators’/ researchers’ understanding of the objects and concepts themselves. It also shows the case studies that present different ways in which institutions have attempted to describe scientific topics thorough art, combining science with digital art, installations, performative arts, interactive exhibits, new media, digital fabrication and so forth.
