ABSTRACT

The destiny of the Indian Ocean is seen as inextricably linked to the destiny of the Pacific Ocean. This chapter explains the policy approach of the Indian government; and suggests policy improvements/corrections in the short-to-medium term. India's policy approach supports forces and factors that favour peace, security and economic development. The Asia-Pacific Region policy is fundamentally sound, but it should encompass Indonesia and Myanmar much more in it; and focus should be on sustained implementation of the policy. The West Asia and the Gulf subregion of Indian Ocean Region (IOR) have been experiencing exceptional turbulence and instability ever since the Arab Spring began in 2011 and went largely astray in subsequent years. In the IOR, India, of late, seems to display even greater commitment and determination to safeguard its interests, while helping its partners to coexist and develop in a harmonious manner.
