ABSTRACT

Following our plea for more attention to be given to DOs in International Affairs, this conclusion provides answers to the three questions that guided our endeavor: 1) What are the main issue areas in which DOs operate? 2) How does power flow in DOs and in their transnational networks? And 3) What can IR learn from and contribute to research on DOs in other disciplines? In particular, we discuss how a processual perspective on power shows that DOs can simultaneously be permeable to heterogeneous network partners and be autonomous actors. Subsequently, we stress that studying DOs as important actors in International Affairs can help to renew IR theory by providing a more comprehensive picture of international politics and power.
