ABSTRACT

The general concepts of screening, as a process, are as applicable when applied to the context of athlete health as they are to any other medical condition. Adopting a screening policy for respiratory conditions in athletes may provide a solution to improve detection and management of upper and lower airway issues in athletes, proving the key screening characteristics are satisfied in the target population of interest. Inadequate management of respiratory issues can lead to sub-optimal training, performance and general wellbeing. The respiratory screening process also offers an opportunity to discuss illness prevention, particularly with respect to upper respiratory tract infection. In terms of longer-term follow-up, it is logical to consider annual surveillance of respiratory health in athletes with a known diagnosis and arrange a regular surveillance programme. An opportune time to review the treatment plan often falls at a pre- season or end of season screening/training camp.
