ABSTRACT
This chapter examines how the notion of utopian depictions of wine landscape in the context of global capitalism is used and negotiated through the re-imaginings of wine landscape heritage by the local community in Burgundy, especially around the UNESCO world Heritage site. It will focus on how wine landscape, defined in terms of climats, has become central to processes of collective visual re-appropriation and to the mise en héritage of the site. An on-going struggle to reconcile the productive ideal and actual terroir is now part of the local political, social and cultural narrative. The chapter discusses how these utopian futures could respond to the growing challenges facing wine communities in the context of climate change.
