ABSTRACT

This chapter covers a range of topics associated with the role of private sector corporations in conflict as well as in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. It outlines the ways that the private sector contributes to social conflicts, while also describing the increased emphasis on holding corporations accountable for their conflict-related actions. From the company's perspective, new relationships are needed with civil society organizations based on genuine dialogue and substantive engagement around changes in policies and practices. One of the most significant policy innovations in the realm of corporations and conflict is the creation of several multi-stakeholder initiatives that seek to regulate corporate actions in conflict zones. A leading institution in the arena of corporations and conflict is the globally active International Alert. International Alert works with companies to craft and deliver advocacy messages to governments and others in the private sector to encourage positive roles in conflict prevention as well as peacebuilding.
