ABSTRACT
The task of identifying the dynamics behind social change is fundamental to all of sociology, but nowhere is this agenda more important than in the field of inequality. This chapter lays out some of the most prominent narratives about the dynamics of changing inequality over the long run of human history. We begin by developing a conventional typology of past inequality forms and then conclude very briefly with the question of how the late modern form has come to be understood.
