ABSTRACT

A new era of interaction among national economies and people is being shaped by globalization. The increased flow of capital, the rapid growth of international trade, the expanded role of multinational companies, and their growing integration into the global economy have created enormous opportunities for sustainable human development. The United Nations and its specialized agencies are charged with advancing the causes of development, the environment, human rights and labor. The Global Compact is a network. At its core are the Global Compact Office and five UN agencies: the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations Environment Program, the International Labor Organization, the United Nations Development Program, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The fundamental responsibility for implementing the policy recommendations of the United Nations resides with national governments, which are frequently jealous of their sovereign right to determine their economic and social future.
