ABSTRACT

The UN Commission on Human Rights appointed a Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women in 1994. These successes were due to several years of strategic planning by women's organizations, especially the International Campaign for Women's Human Rights, a project of the Center for Women's Global Leadership, headed by Charlotte Bunche at Rutgers University. The World Conference of the International Women's Year took place in Mexico City from June 19 to July 2, 1975. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) played a role at both the UN conference and the parallel nongovernmental Tribune. At Copenhagen, as at Mexico City, the official Mid-Decade Review Conference of the UN Decade for Women was held at a different location, the Bella Centre, from the NGO Forum, which was centered at the Amager University Centre. Consensus was more in evidence at the July 15-26, 1985, Nairobi Conference to Review and Appraise the UN Decade for Women.
