ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents his own diplomatic journey started with a childhood in Iraq and later involvement in Iraqi politics before entering into the Iraqi Foreign Service in 1964 and later a new career with the United Nations Secretariat. In the spring of 1967 the State Department organized a seminar for young diplomats assigned to Washington, DC. After his short stay in Washington and his return to Baghdad, he began his work in the Foreign Ministry's legal office. The diplomatic, cultural, economic, and educational relations between Iraq and India were excellent. He attended conferences of the organization in New Delhi and Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the laws of the sea, international rivers, and international trade were thoroughly debated. His assignment to the Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations, which began in January 1973, represented a turning point in his career and a job that he sought because of his attachment to multilateral diplomacy.
