ABSTRACT

Partners have the competence and energy to do the job they are assigned but are also attentive to the organization's purpose. Leaders and followers who behave as partners make the modern military organization work at all times and under all conditions. The most effective followers know they cannot be fully effective unless they work in partnership, which requires both a commitment to high performance and a commitment to develop effective relationships with partners whose collaboration is essential to success in their own work. There are four types of followers. These are the subordinate, the contributor, the politician and the partner. A person who demonstrates a great deal of performance initiative finds ways to improve his or her own performance in the organization, which might include improving skills, sharing resources with team members, and trying new strategies. Relationship initiative refers to the follower's active attempts to improve his or her working relationship with the leader.
