ABSTRACT

Psychological theories of crime explain abnormal behavior, of which crime is one category, as the result of mind and thought processes that form during human development. Psychological thinking about crime has appeared in various forms, beginning with ideas about the mind that seek to show how individuals are different from each other. People have different personalities that produce variations in behavior, some of which is abnormal and some antisocial. Psychologists and psychiatrists have shown how humans learn, how emotions play a role in our behavior, and how chemicals, diet, hormones, and other substances affect our thoughts and subsequent behavioral patterns. Because criminal behaviors are influenced by environmental triggers and are seen to stem from abnormal developmental processes affecting the mind, some form of psychological treatment intervention is necessary to correct or to counteract those exhibiting criminal predispositions. Psychologists aim to change the process whereby these personalities are formed to manipulate the conditions that might trigger antisocial behavior.
