ABSTRACT

Dark Fruit, Porcelain, and Men on the Verge of a His-panic Breakdown—focus on the relationship of race and ethnicity to gayness from the point of view of three multitalented African-American writer-performers, a Singapore-born playwright-filmmaker, and a Chilean-born playwright, all based on the West Coast. Pomo Afro Homos is an abbreviation of Postmodern African-American Homosexuals, a performance group that in a matter of a few years has established itself as the most eloquent theatrical voice for the gay African-American male. Dark Fruit is the second major collaboration of Pomo Afro Homos. The eight skits that make up Dark Fruit offer a strong sample of the team's writing. "Aunties in America: Epiphanies 'n Roaches" satirizes the place of the black man in contemporary gay drama. Dark Fruit is justifiably an angry script, but, as in all good theatre, the anger is controlled and leavened by moments of humor and pathos.
