ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors document the pressures on US athletes to avoid any semblance of political dissent. Using many examples of athletes who have been silenced after an initial engagement with politics, they argue that athletes' wealth, potential future income, and social connections all conspire to keep them quiet. The authors suggest that the position of athletes in the larger political economy also provides them with many opportunities to intervene politically in progressive directions. Although political activism has never been widespread among pro athletes, Adonal Foyle is following in the footsteps of some courageous jocks. Foyle's activism is rare in the world of professional sports. Foyle has refused to be intimidated by those sportswriters and fans who object to his beliefs. As Foyle understands, taking stands on various issues could help the players forge better relations with the community whose support is critical to their continued economic success.
