ABSTRACT

The case of the human being is a special one, because human persons are related to God in a special way. Human self-consciousness seems closely connected with some form of awareness of the divine. The excursion into biblical exegesis was necessary to meet the charge of modern creationists that the doctrine of evolution and especially the derivation of the emergence of the human race from the evolutionary process of animal life contradicts the biblical creation stories. When in the Bible animal life is seen as a product of the earth and the formation of human life as “living soul” is understood as analogous to animal life, then there is no reason why the human being should not have emerged from the evolution of animal life. In a modern perspective, self-organization is characteristic of life on all levels of its evolution.
