ABSTRACT

When African people arrived in the New World, they were confronted by a drastic cultural shock. Their families were broken up, their native tongues outlawed, their customs and arts forbidden. Africans have the distinction of being the only race brought to this land of the free against their will. In the core of the heart of the American race problem the sex factor is rooted, rooted so deeply that it is not always recognized when it shows at the surface. Sexual and racial oppression in America are inseparable for both Black women and men. The raping of enslaved women and the castration of enslaved males were common practices. White people, men and women, came out of the puritanical European tradition, which alienated them from their bodies. They were simultaneously threatened and drawn to what they believed to be the uninhibited, guilt-free sexuality of Blacks.
