ABSTRACT

A person who is protected may be quite safe from attack. She may be so because a protector effectively threatens or uses force on her behalf. She, however, does not use force; for that she is dependent on her protector. Government officials raise, supply and command the military. They consider themselves protectors even if they are civilians. Their perception of the protected can be deduced from the rules they make. Leadership, can be described as the art of getting men into inescapable predicaments. It involves step-by-step ensnarement. It capitalizes on men’s knowledge that the odds are against their serving in combat even if they are in uniform, and also on men’s unwillingness to resist the preliminary or routine. If it is difficult to get men to fight, and if attacks on men’s sexuality are an important part of the training repertoire, military commanders may be right to resist women’s military participation.
