ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explain their experience in working with students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in exploring concepts of media literacy in order to critically view cultural images. They present that some of the challenges the authors faced in experimenting with a new course and approach to culture teaching/learning. The authors suggest that teachers will find in their description ideas for ways to introduce these concepts across the curriculum. The EFL course the authors offered may have served to motivate the students in their exploration of the world around them, and it may also have given them insight into the complexities of intercultural communication as they came to see media messages in a more critical light. The 1990s have also seen a boom in manga, Japanese graphic fiction, which composes a substantial portion of all published material in Japan. Through a course in media literacy, the process of excavation and analysis can be initiated.
