ABSTRACT

Many years ago, in an early attempt to assess Elvis Presley as a cultural phenomenon, I closed an essay by musing that each of us has our own vision of Elvis. 1 Although somewhat less than profound, the statement stands true today, especially after a review of much of the literature devoted to explaining Elvis in the ensuing years and in light of the impressive and varied approaches taken during this most stimulating conference. Fundamentally, all of this is recognition and tribute to the truly protean talent of the young man from Tupelo.
