ABSTRACT

It is widely recognized that the situation of Hispanics in New Mexico is considerably different from that of Latinos in most other places in the United States. The role of New Mexico Hispanics in the 1992 election was typical. The election of 1992 proved to be very different, and New Mexican voters were surprised and flattered by the many visits that began during the primary season. The level of political participation of New Mexican Hispanics is, in some elections, comparable to that of non-Hispanics. In addition to the presidential contests, there were a few other races involving Hispanics that conceivably could have increased Hispanic turnout. In the congressional races, the Hispanic candidates, regardless of party affiliation, attracted a majority of the Hispanic electorate's support. In the general election campaign, New Mexico Hispanics continued to play a substantial role in electoral activities, but were not a particularly distinctive segment.
