ABSTRACT

Much like the wider American society, the U.S. armed forces witnessed numerous racial incidents in the late 1960s within its ranks. How has the Department of Defense sought to cope with its crisis on the racial front? The article outlines several major efforts undertaken by DOD within the last two years to deal with racial turmoil, particularly in the special problem areas related to the distribution of non-white service personnel, off-base housing, and the military system of justice. The author points up several possible future trends regarding military race relations, trends that are sometimes contradictory and not always optimistic.
