ABSTRACT

GeneSys is an experimental knowledge management system that explores issues in the automation of biosequence information analysis—especially with respect to structure/function relationships in gene expression. The system has a knowledge base of facts about molecular biology, an interface to molecular biology databases, and integrated analytical and reasoning tools. The first phase of the project emphasizes the formalization of knowledge about molecular structures and functions. The second phase will help automate the process of deriving new facts from the facts already existing in the databases, and thus will address the problem of analyzing the enormous body of sequence information that will be generated in very large-scale sequencing projects.
