ABSTRACT

A central part of the new respect for universal human rights is the provision, now reasonably solidly in place, for freedom of conscience and belief. This chapter explores two basic questions: Can the fever in Russia be healed in part by spiritual renewal? and Can the institutions of spiritual renewal, the churches, and other religious groups, revive themselves and recover from the long siege of illness to reach a stage of health for themselves? The chapter presents seven "master processes" that work in the developments in religion in the societies of the territory of the former Soviet Union. These processes are also at work in the former East-Central European societies that had experienced Soviet domination. For each of the seven master processes, it identifies a good "marker" or indicator as an example. Many of the traditions and habits of the heart have pre-Soviet roots that were not extirpated by the Communists.
