ABSTRACT

The antiabortion law takes away women's dignity. It expresses the conviction that women are not able to make moral and responsible decisions and that they therefore must be prevented from "making mistakes". Fear paralyzing doctors who face pregnant women with medical problems is a very important factor in the significant worsening of women's reproductive health. Doctors are afraid of issuing prescriptions allowing abortions. In Poland women have no practical access to means of fertility control. Although the state does not officially deny it, the practice shows something opposite. There is no sex education in schools, contraceptives are rarely available outside big cities, and prices for contraceptives are high. These are some of the reasons that only 8 percent of the population effectively uses birth control methods. Polish women have no full access to the medical results of scientific advances. The list of the pills of third generation available in Poland is very short, the medications on the list very expensive.
