ABSTRACT

Violence research became a thriving new industry among government agencies, universities, and broadcasters themselves. Many of those studies found a connection between televised violence and aggressive behavior. Television violence affects youngsters of all ages, of both genders, at all socioeconomic levels and all levels of intelligence. The conviction was hardening that indeed a direct, demonstrable link existed between violence on television and violence in society, and that other unwanted effects were apparent in children and adults who were heavy TV users. Responsible scientists were at pains to point out that not all societal violence could be laid at the door of television. Early in 1996, the US government took action on the television violence matter. Film violence occurs in a moment: a gun is fired, a person dies, and on to the next scene. But in real life, the impact of the moment of violence reverberates through time.
