ABSTRACT

The attack on the treatment philosophy is interesting, since because it comes from so many diverse sources it may prove irresistible. The treatment philosophy is attacked by practitioners in various ways. Those with a research view may point to the fact that there is no 'cure' for delinquency because it is produced by a number of socio-economic factors which the treater can not affect. Children can be received into care at any age and can if necessary remain in care until their eighteenth birthday or, in exceptional cases, their nineteenth birthday. Clearly it is in the interests of both the child and the community to prevent delinquent behavior and the subsequent reaction by society. So far the major force for the prevention of delinquency among young people has only been referred to incidentally— and yet must be the most potent since it has access to all young people consistently over many years.
