ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and reflects upon the nature of support, the process of setting up support services and the issues surrounding schools and colleges in meeting the challenge of inclusion. There have been many stumbling blocks, even when teachers are well disposed towards including pupils with physical and sensory disabilities compared with other sub-groups in the special needs spectrum. Any initiatives and school or college support needs to address these barriers at the same time as supporting any individual pupil or student. The 1993 Education Act sets out regulations and stipulates which issues must be addressed by school or college special educational needs (SEN) policies. There will be a greater amount of time required for preparation and planning in direct relation to the diversity of needs and abilities of the class. Systematic problem solving involves detailing clearly strategies and plans based on including pupils who are disabled, their quality of life and the wider needs of all concerned.
