ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I demonstrate how the style of music, which was crucial to Turkish cinema during the transition to sound, changed over the ensuing decade. At first sight, it might seem that this alteration was related to the change in top-down cultural policies of the early Republican period, but I argue that the change of musical style in Turkish films mostly stemmed from the aim to reach larger audiences, as Turkish cinema was always financially dependent on these audiences, and duly paid attention to their tastes and preferences during this period.
